Obituary of John J. Rath

John J. "Jack" Rath, 87, of Point Pleasant, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his loved ones around him on on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Jack was born in Bayonne on April 26, 1928. He graduated from Bayonne High School and continued on to receive a Master's Degree from Jersey City State College. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Jack worked as a teacher of science and math at the Point Pleasant Beach School System for almost forty years. Prior to that, in his younger years, he worked as a union carpenter in the North Jersey area. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family. Before retiring, he was a Point Beach Football Coach; spent summers as manager of Bay Head Beaches; and was a member of the Point Pleasant Elks. Jack is survived by his wife, of fifty-nine years, Mary "Mae" Campbell Rath. They were married on October 6, 1956. He is also survived by four children, John Rath and his wife Grace of Brick, Robert Rath and his wife Martha of North Plainfield, Lisa Callahan and her husband Seth of Moneta, VA, and Colin Rath and his wife Cherie of Colts Neck; nine grandchildren, Timothy, Elizabeth, James, Samuel, Thomas, Daniel, Connor, Christian, and Riley; and the rest of his relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, James & Gertrude Rath; and brother, Joseph Rath. Visitation will be from 4 – 7 p.m. Wed., Oct. 7 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, 08742. At 9:30 a.m., Thurs., Oct. 8 a Liturgy will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Martha, Point Pleasant, followed by interment Saint Anne Cemetery, Wall.
