Elizabeth Haarlander

Obituary of Elizabeth Lee Haarlander

Elizabeth Lee Dias Haarlander, 81 years of age, of Brick, NJ and Tortola, BVI was called home suddenly November 13, 2016. She was surrounded by her family in her last hours. Elizabeth (Betty Lee) was born September 26, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Frank Markwood and Martha Lee (McLaughlin) Dias. She grew up in her beloved Bay Head, NJ, graduating from Bay Head Grammar School, class of 1949, Point Pleasant Beach High School, class of 1953, and Glassboro State Teachers' College, class of 1957. She met the love of her life, George A. Haarlander, and married February 22, 1964, in Point Pleasant, NJ. Betty Lee pursued her teaching career, touching the lives of many students and forming invaluable friendships in Point Pleasant, before starting her family. Mother to Elizabeth (Eli) and Sarah, she enjoyed her years of homemaking and being a mom. She often said her girls were her greatest accomplishment. As "Noo Noo," her grandchildren were the light of her life, providing her with countless hours of pride and joy. Her love of the sun kept her toes in the sand, here at the Jersey Shore, and her sense of adventure took her to the BVI, where she and George spent more and more of their days in their golden years. Known for her hand written letters of love, her correspondence is one of her greatest legacies. She maintained her countless friendships through these letters and lunches. She is survived by her best friend, George A. Haarlander, her children, Elizabeth (Eli) Haarlander, Sarah (Haarlander) Lovgren and William Lovgren, her grandchildren, Chase Markwood Lovgren, Debora Anahi Reyes, Olivia Day Nicoll, Huggins Isaiah Nicoll, Jude Markwood Lovgren, Kip Markwood Lovgren and Haarper Lee Nicoll. Donations can be made in her memory to Saint Gregory's Pantry, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Date and location will be provided at that time.
