Obituary of Genevieve da Silva

Genevieve Cordeiro da Silva, of Point Pleasant, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Care One in Wall, New Jersey. Genevieve was a unique women, who was fiercely independent her entire life. Born in Fall River, Mass., she was the oldest of 5 children to Candida Faria Cordeiro (born in San Miguel, Azores) and Antonio Cordido Cordeiro (born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). At a young age, her family moved back to Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. She returned to the "Iron Bound" section of Newark, New Jersey where she met Miguel Carlos da Silva. Married to Miguel in July of 1941, they settled in Newark and eventually moved to Point Pleasant where she set out to manage her new life with two wonderful children, Rose and Michael. She was a dedicated mother who thought of her family first and herself last. When she and her husband were building a house in Point Pleasant in 1971, it was discovered by the bank that Miguel was retired, excluding his ability to get a mortgage. However, Genevieve walked into the bank in Newark and would not leave without an answer. She got the mortgage, unheard of back then for a retiree, never missed a payment and paid the house off in 1996. In moving down the shore, Genevieve was interested in learning new and exciting things up until her passing. She took at-home classes for cooking from Rutgers University and was an excellent cook. She would think it was nothing to walk into town to shop and walk home several miles away. In later years, she raised money for Deborah Hospital and was one of the top producers in the Point Pleasant Chapter for many years. She never learned to drive and had to take buses, cabs or walked wherever she wanted to go her entire life. However, it did not stop her from doing things she wanted to do. She was a communicant of Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant Beach. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Cordeiro da Silva Colin and husband, William John; her son, Michael Walter da Silva and wife, Donna Marie; her grandson Justin Daniel da Silva and wife, Sandra Anne, along with her great grandchildren Jaiden, Damian and Dylan da Silva; and her sisters Albertina Rego, and Candida "Honey" Forgacs. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, November 27th at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 10 a.m., Monday, November 28th a Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Saint Peter Church, 406 Forman Avenue (corner of Saint Louis Avenue) Point Pleasant Beach, followed by entombment at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
