Obituary of Eleanor R. Steger

Eleanor R. Polhemus Steger, 91, of Point Pleasant, passed away, Sunday, January 22, 2017. Born in Spring Lake Heights and formerly of Villa Park, Wall Twp., she attended a two-room schoolhouse and lived on Ocean Road before moving to Point Pleasant. Mrs. Steger was busy through the years volunteering in numerous ways for Saint Peter School and Parish with activates such as the PTA, Church Bearer, and 8th Grade Class Mother. She was a Scout Mother for the Point Pleasant Borough Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and many other activities involving both children and adults. She was past-president of the Point Pleasant Business Professional Women's Club and Old Guard Ladies Auxiliary, with over 250 members. She also was president of the NJ B.P.W., with fifty clubs and 5,000 members, and represented the NJ B.P.W. at many conventions, legislative conferences in Washington, DC, and was a guest of First Lady Patricia Nixon at the White House. She travelled to many of the U.S. States, as well as Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia, Canada, Mexico, Italy, and the Vatican with Pope John Paul, II. She was employed at Tally's Sales and Service, Bridge Avenue, Point Pleasant as a secretary and office manager and retired after thirty years of service. Upon retiring she volunteered at Point Pleasant Hospital for nine years and was a member of the Point Pleasant Historical Society. The beach and ocean were a large part of her life. She enjoyed all people especially young children. God Bless All. She was predeceased by her loving, devoted husband, of sixty-five years, Ray Steger; parents, Charles and Viola White Polhemus; brothers, C. Wesley and wife Rebecca (Betty), Charles, Jr., and wife Dorothy; Edward, Richard, and Robert; and sister, Edith Bryant. Surviving are two sons, Thomas Steger and his wife Linda of Wall and Donald Steger and his wife Kathleen of Manasquan; four grandchildren, Thomas, Jr. and his wife Kelly of Jacksonville, FL, Christopher and his wife Lauren of Manchester, Jamie Steger of Wall, and Timothy Steger and his wife Gretchen of Manasquan; seven dearly loved great-grandchildren, Elijah, Amelia, Piper, Noelle, Eamon, Erin, and Caitlin; many loved nephews, nieces, cousins, and sister-in-law, Lois Polhemus. Visitation will be from 2 – 4 p.m. & 7 – 9 p.m., Wednesday, January 25 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 9:30 a.m., Thursday, January 26 a Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Martha, Point Pleasant, followed by interment at White Lawn Cemetery, Point Pleasant.
