When I first moved to Point Pleasant almost 40 years ago my daughter Michelle attended Nellie Bennett and that's when our life with Jack began. When Danielle started school I found spare time on my hands and volunteered at the school. With Jack's encouragement I applied for a secretarial job in the district. Not knowing anyone in the town he told me to use him as a reference. I did and was offered a job almost immediately. I worked for the district for almost 30 years upon retirement. I continually thank Jack for giving me that opportunity.
While working I would get, the call. " Mrs. Duclos, there is no room on the bus so I am taking your girls home." They loved Jack and would look forward to their special ride home with, THE PRINCIPAL.
Mr. McHugh touched so many lives. A pillar of the community and just a wonderful gentleman. I was truly blessed to have known him.

Sorry for your loss! He was a very special man! I went from K-12 in the school system & I can't say enought about him! I had the priviledge of working with him in helping out in the office of the new Ocean Road School for several months. He knew almost every student by name. He was loved by many & will be greatly missed! Here is a picture of him enjoying a cup of coffee with the Class of 1970 at breakfast after our 45th class reunion.

To All of the McHugh Family,
We are so very sorry to hear of Mr. McHugh's passing. In reading his obituary, it is evident that a very important part of Point Pleasant and its history is gone. Mr. McHugh was one of the "founding fathers" who helped to make Point Pleasant and the Point Pleasant School District the wonderful community that it is today. His was certainly a life well lived and to be celebrated.
For us, one of the best perks of attending Mass at St. Martha's was the possibility of running into Jack and Irene McHugh, seeing their beautiful smiling faces, and hearing their kind and encouraging words. We hope that your wonderful memories are of special consolation at this time. His goodness lives on in all of you.. Special thoughts and prayers to Mrs. McHugh, another amazingly wonderful person, educator, and friend.
Sincerely,
Debbie, Joe, Shannon, and Meghan Dunne (Reynolds)

As the new Nellie Bennett School opened, Mr. McHugh greeted all the students at the front door of the first day. I happen to be first in line and had my picture taken with him for the local newspaper as I started 5th grade. He was a kind, gentle and caring soul and I have so fond memories of that year. RIP Mr. McHugh, heaven welcomed it's newest angel.

I was so sorry to read about Mr. McHugh's passing. He was my 6th grade teacher at Fire House #1 in Point Pleasant his first year of teaching there. Then he was the Vice Principal at the new High School. He was a wonderful, caring, warm man. He was the Principal at Nellie Bennett School when my children went there and whenever I would see him at the store or anywhere in town and he would always recognize me, just like he did every other student he ever had. The last time I saw him was at the class of 66's 50th reunion last year. RIP Mr. McHugh. My condolences to his whole family.

We are so sorry to hear this very sad news,
Jack was such a warm hearted and likable person that made such an impact on Point Pleasant and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He could tell you the name of every student at Nellie Bennett and his door was always open. Dennis remembers well his time at Camp Penobscot in Maine. Who could think that years later he would be our two sons principal. Growing up in Point Pleasant and raising our family there was better because of people like Jack.
Our deepest condolences to Irene and the McHugh family.

I have such wonderful memories of Mr McHugh. I was one of his first students in the firehouse. He was always warm, gentle and caring towards everyone. All through my school years and beyond, he was always easy to talk to and on several occasions helped me through some troubled times in my life. I will always love and appreciate his concern and kindness. He definitely touched many lives and I'm certain he'll be rewarded in heaven. My deepest sympathy to the family.

Rest In Peace Mr McHugh- you the touched my life in a way I that I will always be grateful for. As an elementary student in the first grade my parents were going through a nasty divorce. You were always kind, thoughtful and even at that young age you were one of the few adults in my life I could count on. Aside from your support in school you never hesitated to do the right thing and help your students. I remember one time our bus driver had a sub. Me and my friend Dawn Kobin refused to get on the bus because the driver was a “stranger”. Both of our moms worked so you picked us up in your own car and didn’t even lecture us about not getting on the bus. In fact you told us you understood why we didn’t get on the bus and had the office call my mom if there was going to be a sub for the rest of the year. In a time when adults were not behaving as they should you showed us to believe in the good. That day helped to shape me in so many ways. You will be missed!
