George F. Eckert

Obituary of George F. Eckert

George F. Eckert, 96, of Point Pleasant, passed away, Saturday, March 31, 2018. George Eckert lived a full life. He was surrounded by his family and friends even during his last days on earth. The son of a truck driver and homemaker, he grew up in the Eckert family house, a tenement in Elizabeth New Jersey. He served proudly in the Marine Corp in WWII and was involved in mop-up operations on Guadalcanal and other islands in the Pacific campaign. He was an expert rifleman and scout sniper for his company and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. In the early 1950's, George moved to Point Pleasant where he built a house, started a sheet metal business, and raised his family with his wife Mary who was also from Elizabeth. Together they raised three sons: Gary now residing in Idaho, Glenn in Point Pleasant with his dear wife Jo who passed on in 2009, and Gil in Middletown with wife Anne. Glenn continues to run the sheet metal business – something George was very proud of. George was a lifelong tinkerer, hobbyist, and outdoorsman. Through the years, George built racing garveys, house trailers, cabins, go-carts, minibikes, gold mine classifiers, and countless other gifts made of copper that he proudly gave to friends, family, and acquaintances. George was happiest when he was deer hunting with his friends on his property in New York State where he and the family had eventually built a cabin. His travels also took him to Montana and Idaho to hunt elk. Outdoor life was one of his passions. George enjoyed traveling and driving all around the US with his trailer in tow. He had no bucket list because he did everything he wanted to do when he wanted to do it. He was bigger than life, with phrases such as; don't let money burn a hole in your wallet; you can't take it with you; and it doesn't get any better than this. George was predeceased by his wife Mary and his sister Doris. He is survived by his three sons, one daughter-in-law, his grandchildren: JR, Jason, Bailey, Brian, Beth, and Katie, and great grandchildren: Jamie, Frankie, Olivia, Chase, Alex, Abby, and Olivia. George's wish was that everyone that he knew celebrate his life, a life well lived. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday April 4, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, where at 6 p.m. a service will be held.
