Obituary of Edmund "Jack" Batchelar, Jr.

Edmund Jackson Batchelar, Jr. "Jack", 89, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2018. Born in Jersey City to the late Edmund J., Sr. and Helen Dennis Batchelar, he lived in Montclair, Middletown, and for past sixty-three years in Point Pleasant. Jack was a graduate of The Choate School, Wallingford, CT and Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He was a United States Army veteran and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After his service, he was employed by Pleasant Farms, Point Pleasant Beach, and went on to work as a microbiologist for A&P, Revlon, and Charles of the Ritz. Jack was a skilled craftsman and built a vacation home in Southern Vermont, which is now enjoyed by a third generation. He also was instrumental in the renovation of The Growing Stage Children's Theatre, Netcong. He built several pieces of furniture for the family homes and also made some original hooked rugs and counted cross-stitch art. Jack enjoyed swimming, fishing, skiing, sailing, boating, reading, and was a parishioner of Saint Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Point Pleasant Beach. He was predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan. Surviving are his beloved wife, of sixty-seven years, Gretchen Conover Batchelar; and four daughters, Ann Nitka and husband Steve, Carol Pable and husband Bob, M. Elizabeth Klesse and husband Chris, and Susan Batchelar. Also surviving are his brother, Robert; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Rebecca, Zachary, Jack, Jordan, William, Jennifer, Caitlin, and Jackson; and one great-granddaughter, Sandra. Memorial visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 11 a.m., Thursday, April 26 a service will be held at Saint Mary's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Bay & Atlantic Aves., Point Pleasant Beach, with inurnment at the Parish Memorial Garden.
