Obituary of Harvey M. Swensen

Harvey Murray Swensen passed away on Friday October 2nd at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He would have been 67 on Monday. He was born and raised in Point Pleasant and attended school there. In 1969 he moved to Brick Township. He joined the US Navy in December of 1960 and was an original plank owner of the USS Kitty Hawk on which he served for three years. While on board the USS Kitty Hawk when the ship landed in port he served as the Captain's driver and also served as a Vice Admiral's driver when stationed in San Diego. He was a member of the USS Kitty Hawk Veterans Association. Harvey was a 32 year active exempt member of the Laurelton Fire Company of Brick serving as Captain for 3 years. He was Chairman of the Restoration Committee for the 1937 Diamond T. He also served as Honor Guard for Brick Township firefighters. He served as Cubmaster of Pack 63 at St. Dominic's for 6 years and was a soccer coach for several years with the Brick Recreation League. Harvey was the owner of Svenco Excavating for 37 years. He also worked as a tug boat Captain for J.H. Reid Construction Co. He enjoyed his 5 grandchildren, his Harley, camping, dancing, playing dominoes, and traveling the country. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all. He was predeceased by his parents Lars and Aslaugh Swensen. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Kerekes Swensen and his two sons, Timothy H. and wife Carol of Brick and Stephen L. and his wife Janna of Manahawkin. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Lauren, Kelly, Austin, Shelby and Stephen, Jr., his brother Arnold and wife Ingrid of Brick, his sisters Sonja and husband Joseph Majorie of Florida, Lilly Roberts of Lakewood, Esther and husband Rodger Getz of Alabama, Lolly and husband Junior Huhn of Point Pleasant. Also, his in laws, Stephen and Roberta Kerekes of New Hampshire, Joseph and Diann Kerekes of South River and Elizabeth and William Doran of Virginia and many nieces, nephews. Viewing will be held at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home at 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant on Tuesday October 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Fireman Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday evening. A funeral mass will be held at St. Dominic's Church, 250 Old Squan Road, Brick at 9 am on Wednesday the 7th. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, N.J. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, Att: Esophageal Cancer Research, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 7, Syracuse, New York 13057-0007.
