Obituary of Marvin Ray Steger

Marvin Ray Steger, 86, of Point Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Claremont Care Center. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, he moved to Point Pleasant in 1947. He graduated from Trinity High School, Iowa, and attended Iowa State University prior to being drafted in 1943. As a member of the Army Air Force, during World War II, he served as a weather equipment technician and was stationed in Stuttgart Army Air Force Base, Arkansas; Drew Air Force Base, Florida; and Camp Sea Girt. He received his training at the Sea Girt Inn and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1946. Ray was employed as a buyer and manager for Borden's Office Supplies, Point Pleasant Beach, for twenty two years. After that he worked for Charney's of Toms River, for nineteen years, retiring in 1990. He was an active member of The Old Guard of the Greater Point Pleasant area and served as treasurer for fourteen years and acted as chairman for The Old Guard Flea Market for several years. He also participated in the Bowling and Golf Leagues and was a communicant of the Church of Saint Martha, Point Pleasant, where he served as an usher. Ray enjoyed being with his family and friends. He took great pride in his gardens of both flowers and vegetables. Predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Marie Steger, Ray is survived by his beloved wife of sixty five years, Eleanor Polhemus Steger; two sons, Thomas Steger and his wife Linda of Glendola and Donald Steger and his wife Kathleen of Manasquan; four grandchildren, Thomas Steger, Jr. and his wife Kelly, Jamie Steger, Christopher Steger and his wife Lauren, and Timothy Steger and his wife Gretchen; and six great-grandchildren, Erin, Caitlin, Elijah, Noelle, Amelia, and Eamon. Friends may visit from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m., Friday, October 16 at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 10:30 a.m., Saturday, a Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Martha, followed by interment at White Lawn Cemetery, Point Pleasant. As an expression of sympathy, donations made in his memory to Saint Gregory's Pantry, 804 Bay Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742 are suggested.
