Elisabeth Fischer

Obituary of Elisabeth Fischer

Elisabeth Meulenkamp Fischer, age 100, died Tuesday, November 21 close to midnight, the same time of day as her birth, in her home of 45 years in Mantoloking surrounded by family. Beppy was born in Arnhem, The Netherlands on June 23nd, 1917 and spent her youth in Brussels, Belgium. She received training as a child nurse and being a bit of the rebel in her family, she went off to do live-in child care in England. That independent streak stayed with her for the rest of her life. In 1940, at age 23, she accepted a position to care for the baby of a Dutch diplomat and his American wife. Within weeks WWII came to the Netherlands and the diplomat was ordered to leave Europe and make his way to the United States. For over three months Beppy travelled with the family and other members of the Dutch diplomatic corps as they fled through war torn France into Spain and Portugal. She left Europe by ship from Lisbon and on August 24, 1940 Beppy saw the US for the first time as she landed in New York City. During the war years she continued to work for the diplomat's family, living at his postings in Mexico City and Ottawa, Canada. While in Ottawa she played tennis with the future Queen of the Netherlands, Juliana. Beppy spent time in the Philadelphia area where she met her future husband, Ramsay M B Fischer. In 1948 she married Ramsay and became a US citizen. Their first home was in Philadelphia where their two children were born. A few years later they moved to the suburbs, living in Narberth and Wynnewood, PA. Beppy had gifted hands and when her kids were young, she worked at home sewing and making many different crafts. She then worked for Jean Crowl Studio in Narberth using those same crafty hands. Upon Ramsay's retirement, the couple moved to their family's summer home in Mantoloking to live year-round. Beppy had the great joy of having her daughter Barbara and then husband Joe build a house next door so when the two grandchildren came along they were close at hand. Beppy became Oma to everyone after that. Son Peter and wife Carol settled in Maine which became a wonderful retreat for the family. After Ramsay's death in 2003 Beppy stayed on in the Mantoloking house and eventually Barbara came to stay with her mother. The house survived Sandy. Beppy was able to live out her life in her own home with the care of family and especially her dear friend and caregiver, Dawn…a blessing for sure. In her younger days, Beppy and Ramsay were members of the Savoy Company of Philadelphia, an amateur theater group. She was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head, a member of the Seaweeders Garden Club, and a former member of the Bay Head Yacht Club. Elisabeth is survived by her younger sister (98), Catherine van Breemen-Meulenkamp of The Hague, The Netherlands; her daughter Barbara DeAmicis and her partner, Dick Creek of Mantoloking and Cherry Hill, NJ; her son Peter Fischer and his wife Carol Jackson of Bristol, ME; her son-in-law Joseph DeAmicis of Bay Head; her grandson TC DeAmicis of Bay Head; her granddaughter Morgan Meyer and her husband Jon of Toms River, NJ; and her nieces and nephews Frederic van Breemen and his wife Marion of Baarn, The Netherlands; John Wilde and his wife Marty of Milford, NH; Charles Fischer of Hobe Sound, FL; Ann Silva and her husband Russ of Charleston, SC; and Stuart Fischer and his wife Jeanette Mall of New York, NY. She is predeceased by her brother Johan Meulenkamp of The Netherlands and her niece, Louise Romswinckel–van Breemen of Doorwerth, The Netherlands. A celebration of Beppy's life will be held in early 2018. Contributions in Beppy's name can be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 500 Lake Ave, Bay Head, NJ 08742 or to any organization that does good things for dogs.
