Obituary of Thomas "Scoot" Martin Shields, Jr.
Thomas “Scoot” Martin Shields, Jr., 89, of Lake Worth, FL and Toms River, passed away, Friday, October 12, 2018.
Born and raised in Kearny, he also lived in Point Pleasant for many years.
He was a graduate of Saint Benedict’s Prep, Newark, and attended Saint Peter’s, Jersey City, and Seton Hall, South Orange.
Tom was a United States Navy, Korean War veteran and served aboard the USS Leyte, CV-32.
He worked as a steamfitter and retired from Steamfitters Local Union 475, Newark/Warren.
Tom was Past Grand Knight and member of the Knight of Columbus, Our Lady of Grace Council # 402, Harrison, and was an avid baseball fan.
Surviving are his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Margaret “Peggy” (Mulhare) Shields; and five children, Thomas “Chip” M. Shields, III and wife Nancy of Wall, Peggy Bruno of Toms River, Bryan Shields and wife Helen of Tinton Falls, Ellen Campo and husband John of Toms River, and Christopher Shields of Point Pleasant. Also surviving are nine grandchildren aka “Murphs,” Trisha, Kyle, Thomas, Eric, Joshua, Courtney, Philip, Tyler, and John; and five great-grandchildren, Gage, Madison, Peyton, Shyanne, and Jaxon. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Lindsay; in-laws, Thomas and Margaret Mulhare; and daughter-in-law, Susan Shields.
Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m., Tuesday, October 16 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, where at 6:30 p.m. a prayer service will be held. At 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
