Bill was a living example of all Prep stood for. I guarantee God and our other classmates who have made the passage were waiting for him with smiles on their faces.
His efforts to keep us together with 3-4 shore luncheons a year were extraordinary. I bet he does the same in heaven – as long as they have a decent bar and good prices!!
He will be missed by all…………
May he rest in peace.

I have added pictures of Bill from our Prep '59 Shore lunches. I wish I had more.

It breaks my heart to hear of Bill's passing. He was always so enthusiastic about promoting our many Prep '59 get-togethers at the Jersey shore and we all enjoyed his bombastic emails announcing each upcoming event. He was warm and outgoing; and he thoroughly enjoyed each and every luncheon with his fellow Prep classmates. His eyes sparkled with joy on seeing and welcoming each attendee. It was a pleasure to have known him in high school and to have renewed that friendship during these later years.

A brief insight to my uncle. I had to prepare a bio for the Priest so I sent him this. I also gave a more in depth eulogy, I could go on for hours
Bill was a brilliant man who had a deep inner faith for the Lord. He loved his sisters so much and was very grateful he got to spend more time with his sister Judie as he lived with her and husband Moe this past year.
He was an accomplished classically trained pianist as he taught himself. He read and read and read. He spoke about 5 languages again learning on his own. His “hobby” was translating Latin Mass into other languages.
He loved his parents and would tell me stories of his great dad who I never met. A tough coal miner from Pennsylvania who built a beautiful life for his wife and children. And his mother my grandmother who he shared a special bond with.
Later in life I don’t think anything gave him more joy than to watch my sisters son Mason as she and her husband Jason were at work. He taught him everything, played music, talked about their sports hero’s. Learned German. It was great to see
Finally, I think Bill went to heaven on his own terms. To the beat of his own drum. Quietly without letting anyone know. As this was his want in life.
He was unique. One of a kind. He was simply Bill
He was my guy. He was mine

From George McNally
Of the entire class of ’59 at St. Peter’s Prep, I knew many by name and more by face. I admired many of my fellow students but I was only close with a few. I don’t think that any of us could constantly interact with everyone but Bill Petix seemed to really know a great number of his fellow students. He continuously reached out. And he was that way all his life, always speaking to people, always connecting, always interested in everyone, valuing everyone, loving everyone. He was truly democratic. Being Bill Petix was like being Walt Whitman.
When we were young, I knew him as my partner in various escapades. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. We did things together. We undertook what we liked to think of as ADVENTURES.
.
When we were older, I knew another side of Bill, an inner life that he could not easily share.
To explore this side of him, I’ll borrow a little bit from Thomas Merton. We can often feel that our lives are a mystery completely beyond our resolving, that God is a mystery completely beyond our understanding. Bill was a searcher. He read and wrote all his life. I sensed that he had “a capacity to read God in between the lines.” I sensed that he experienced his own life as dancing between the poles of knowing and unknowing. I sensed that he felt acutely the mystery that was his own life, a mystery that was not wholly communicable.
But I also knew that he delighted in his own journey. He understood the joy of the examined life. The physical adventures of his youth grew to become another kind of adventure, a continuing spiritual conversation he had with himself.
I celebrate his life even as I grieve for not just the loss of the friend I knew but for the mystery that I could not know.

Uncle Billy was a great man who will be missed dearly! So enjoyed all my conversations and emails with him regarding people with lots of vowels! He knew all and I was loved when he called me Swifty Lazar! He was a great man, great son, great brother and most importantly a great uncle to my dear friend! Sending love and prayers your way!

Bill Petix - - a Master of polysyllabic prose - - a smiling "teddy bear" - - a NJ storyteller extraordinaire - - a Jersey shore luncheon arranger and host for our '59 crew - - - - he will indeed be missed and well remembered.
I knew Bill only from a distance during our PREP days but even then he was an unforgettable presence. In more recent years, however, as some of us gathered for lunch from time to time in the shore area I got to know him more. He was affable, always smiling, regaling the group with his steel trap memories of days gone by. He loved the PREP to the core.
Rest in peace my friend.
