


Obituary of Charles J. McCarthy
Charles James McCarthy peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Plainfield, he was a graduate of Oratory Prep School in Summit and attended Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD.
Charlie was an exempt member of Ocean Fire Company No. 1 since 1956 and he was the building chairman on the construction project of the fire company on Arnold Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach. He was also a member of the Point Pleasant Elks Lodge1698, The Kiwanis of Greenbriar, and the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart Church in Bay Head where he also served as an usher.
Charlie retired from the railroad (NJ Transit) after a long and rewarding career and continued operating a railroad vicariously through his model train layouts.
He was so proud of his Irish heritage and his country of which he served in the US Army National Guard for nine years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Winifred and Charles McCarthy; sisters, Jean Fritz, Sister Mary Theresa McCarthy, RSM, and Sister Catherine McCarthy, RSM; his son, Charles McCarthy; and daughter, Rebecca Shipley.
Charles is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Charlotte "Bunny" (nee Polhemus) McCarthy; daughters, Michelle Haber, Maureen Rossi and dear friend, Charles Smith, Nancy Winifred Quigley, Mary Catherine Kearns and husband, James; son, Michael Wesley McCarthy; sister-In-law, Angel Polhemus; and son-in-law, John Shipley. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and two Siamese cats, Max and Reggie, all of whom he cherished, loved, and adored.
Visitation will be 3 – 5 p.m., Monday, December 14 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 15 a Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Bay Head, which will be livestreamed and may be viewed by visiting www.sacredheartbayhead.com Interment will follow at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan. (Facial coverings are required and adherence to social distancing will be in effect at all locations.)
