Joan Brown

Obituary of Joan P. Brown

Joan Pappas Brown, 92, of Point Pleasant, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021.

Born in Manhattan, New York to the late John and Matilda Pappas, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert E Brown; sister, Elsie Rothamel; and grandson, John Robert Kelly. Joan leaves behind her daughter, Mari Jean Kelly and her husband, Thomas of Point Pleasant; three sons, Mark Brown of Hammonton, and Steven and Robert Brown of Willingboro, NJ. Also surviving are her five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Joan graduated from the High School of Music and Art in New York, which she truly loved. In Joan’s early twenties, she worked for Lord & Taylor, (Manhattan) in their office and enjoyed seeing the many famous people passing through. She then traveled with her sister, Elsie and her children to Key West, Florida and ended up remaining there, meeting and marrying our father, Robert E Brown (US Navy). With her husband, Robert, and daughter, Mari Jean, she traveled overseas to Kwajalein (Marshall Islands located in the South Pacific Ocean). After returning to New Jersey, all three sons were born in Toms River. The last trip overseas was to French Morocco (Africa) with the entire family.

After returning to the U.S., the family settled in Willingboro, N.J. for many years where her children grew up. During this time, Joan worked for fifteen years as a secretary for BCAP, which included the Alcohol and Head Start Programs.

At the age of 65, Joan retired and came to Point Pleasant to live with her daughter, Mari Jean, husband, Thomas and children. With an abundance of time, Joan created many beautiful pieces of art, on wood, canvas, glass, using water color and acrylic paints. She then got involved in the many craft fairs in the Point Pleasant and Brick area. Joan had a faithful following each year, up into her early eighties. She also enjoyed creating dolls, and crocheted many beautiful pieces such as table cloths and doilies.

Joan’s granddaughter Eileen, and the many grandsons and great-grandchildren loved visiting her room filled with her artwork and nick-knacks she collected throughout the years.

Joan had a love for cats, and had many over the years, which kept her company and made her happy.

Mom was a strong woman that held the family together, always reminding us of what was most important in life… Love of God and family.
