Elizabeth LeChard

Obituary of Elizabeth LeChard

Elizabeth LeChard (aka, Betsy, No Jokes, and more recently No No Jokes by her 3 year old grandson), 73, recently of Milton, DE and lifetime resident of Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach, NJ passed away, Sunday, August, 15, 2021.

She was born in Point Pleasant, to the late Gertrude and Andrew Handzo, who we still remember on a daily basis as his signature marked so many maps of Ocean County.  She graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School and LIM with an Associate’s Degree in Merchandising.  She owned a store (The Rendezvous in Red Bank in the 1970s) and later worked in several schools in the area.

Betsy was a quiet spark.  She loved with her whole heart, and once you were in, you were in for life.  She wanted people to feel comfortable at her house, and she always had an overflowing snack drawer and a New Year’s Day party where everyone could come to fill their bellies or nurse their hangovers.  She loved Christmas and filled the house with presents and hid them in the bathtub (which was not the most covert spot).  She loved jigsaw puzzles and card games, especially gin rummy, hearts, and bridge.  She spent her summers in Maine at her cabin on Long Pond (named Elizabeths’ Cove after her and Elizabeth Arden, a previous owner).  In her earlier years, she would drop a fishing line into the water, and in her later years, she was just happy looking out on to the lake while she knit or while she was finishing a word search.  She would send you a greeting card for every single holiday (who knew they had cards for Arbor Day?), and she made the best blueberry-raspberry jam.  She loved lobster, Bananas Foster, key lime pie, and root beer floats.

She gracefully left her husband of twenty-nine years, William, of Milton, DE.  She has a son, Keith Leonhard of York, PA who is married to April Leonhard, and a daughter, Denise Leonhard of Sea Bright, NJ who is married to Jeff Friedman.  She also left behind three stepchildren, William (Bill) LeChard, Jr and his wife Beatriz, Amanda Benedict and her husband Steve, and Alison Morris.  She leaves behind her grand-children: Ryan Friedman, Skyler Welfley, Hannah Welfley, Elena LeChard, Adriana LeChard, Brianna Morris, Deidre Morris, Liam Mejia, Ivy Benedict, and Paisley Benedict.  Over the course of her lifetime, she had several dogs (Pepe, Bourbon, Casablanca, Flossie, Cleo, and Maggie) and a couple of cats (Tiger and Lady) whom she loved dearly.

As her husband says, she is now up in heaven, arguing with his mother over who will be able to take care of their late beloved dog, Cleo.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 5 p.m., Sunday, August 22 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, where at 4 p.m. a service will be held.  Interment will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 23 at White Lawn Cemetery, Trenton and Borden Aves., Point Pleasant.

Betsy loved the ocean and beach and taught her children to love and protect them as well.  In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to Surfrider, would be appreciated (www.surfrider.org).
