Michael Emerson

Obituary of Michael J. Emerson

Michael Joseph “Sugar” Emerson, 73, of Brick, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Willow Springs Healthcare Center.

Mike was a gentle soul, beloved by his wife of more than forty-eight years, Anne (Ueda) Emerson; and his daughters, Jessica Emerson, Dana (Emerson) Cartwright, and Tiffany (Emerson) Varley and left a lasting impression through his good humour and willing smile on everyone who met him. His grandchildren, Emmett, Tatum, Owyn, Maya, and Erik will deeply miss him, his jokes, songs, and ready willingness to play. Mike also leaves his younger sister, Patricia and husband, Bill; brothers, Joseph and wife, Robin and James and partner, Stephen; brother-in-law, Arthur and wife, Pat, their children, nieces, and nephews to remember him.

Mike was born and grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey before moving to the Jersey Shore with his family in his teenage years. With a lifelong love of fishing, Mike was one of a small group of young rascals who formed the Isolationists Fishing Club in Hoboken in the late '50s, often taking day trips along the coast and to various fishing spots in North Jersey for a day of fishing and mischief. Mike continued to enjoy fishing with his friends and family throughout his life. He loved music, playing guitar and singing along in his younger years, and was an avid reader, taking up creative writing once retirement gave him the time and space to share his unique insights on life and the world around him-his play “Einstein's Mirror” was performed by a local theatre group.

Mike's attitude toward life was to be curious, adventurous, and dedicated to those he loves, a legacy carried on by his loved ones. His daughters and grandchildren will continue to pursue the big catches, whether it's the first, biggest or most fish or simply pursuing a happy life with authenticity, kindness, and good humour. Everyone loved Mikey, and everyone will miss him.
