Attached is a picture of my high school gradation (1982); my aunt Joan is on the left and my mother, Patricia, is
on the right. Also, a picture of my twin cousins, Cindy and Cathy at our graduation party at Aunt Joan's house.
A Poem for my Aunt Joan in the style of the Shakespearean sonnet:
Sonnet 11
Actions speak louder than words ever do
Those driven by wealth or power they die
The slowest of deaths, their minds never knew
What it’s like to soar and be free to fly
Matthew says it’s narrow to find the gate
Unconditional love, a rare thing found
Those shackled by chains and heart full of hate
Forever they strain and their hearts be bound
But, she showed me the way to have such love
Deepest secrets revealed and never judged
Yet doubting the presence of One above
The things of today were never begrudged
When the tunnel opened showing the way
A new life began that will not be swayed

She wasn't just our Aunt, there were times she was so much more.
She kinda sorta could have been our grandmother, she wasn't old enough to be our moms mom, they only had 13 years between them. She was old enough to consider her a grandmother figure, to me she was the spitting image of our grandma, had her hands and hair and sort of took on the role after our gram was gone. She didn't just have a drawer of goodies, she had a cabinet full!
She was like another mother sometimes. She was a place to stop on the way home from school. We would chat while she prepared dinner. She was a good listener.
She was my landlord although I never paid rent, she let me live with her after my parents moved out of NJ. She helped me set up the basement as a place to call home while I looked for a place of my own. She helped me set up my first place, her and my sister cleaned it from top to bottom, even with a drawer in the fridge full of maggots. The best part was she was right down the street so I never felt alone.
In my 35 years living in Point Pleasant there isn't a time I dont remember being at her house for one reason or another and Christmas Eve was a big family party! Even after moving she would welcome us to stay with her and she would take care of us like we missed no time at all. It was always a goodbye and see ya soon god willing - but she made it 48 days shy of turning 90 and when Uncle Dave passed they were married 70 years, Something you dont see often and something to be proud of..
She was one tough cookie no doubt about that, but she loved and cared about each of us beyond just being our Aunt. Aunt Joan you will be missed terribly ❤

I am going to miss you immensely but I am glad
you are no longer suffering and are at peace. Reunited with Uncle Dave, Grandma, Gary, Aunt Patty and all those who passed before you. Until we meet again - my favorite aunt ❤️
