Mary Hartigan

Obituary of Mary M. Hartigan

Mary Margaret (Hedrick) Hartigan, daughter of Margaret and Harry Hedrick passed into her eternal rest on May 29, 2023.

Mary was born in Rahway, NJ on October 25, 1926 and graduated from Rahway High School. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Thomas Matthew Hartigan, her brother Harry and his son Keith, and her grandson Austin Matthew Hartigan.

Mary and husband Tom started raising their family in Linden and in 1956 moved to the Arrowhead neighborhood of Brick, NJ and later in 1964 to Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. Initially Mary stayed home to raise her children then worked for Britts Department store before becoming a cafeteria worker in the Point Pleasant Beach school system. This was possibly to keep an eye on her children but mostly as a caring and compassionate citizen and parent. Mary was very active in the PTO and Boosters for Point Beach schools. Throughout her children’s school years Mary was often found working the concessions at sporting events, participating in parades, attending school concerts and spending time at Jenkinson’s beach and pool with family and friends always enjoying a good laugh when socializing. She treasured her early summer mornings at Pleasure Park overseeing permits for tennis court times, watching a friendly but competitive match, and getting to know the people using the courts. Over the years she enjoyed watching golf, a passionate pastime of husband Tom, on television.

Later, after retiring Mary moved to a simpler home in Greenbrier, traveled more including taking her family on an Alaskan cruise, going to the gym several times per week and even taking up golf, learning to play on the Greenbrier par 3 course. Over the past nine years, Mary was lovingly cared for in her home by her daughter Ryland.

She is survived by son Craig, his wife Karen; son Timothy, his wife Lori Samolyk; son Thomas, his wife Gail and their children, Caitlyn and Séamus; daughter Ryland, her daughter Meghan, and  great-grandson, Kai; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
