Obituary of Elmor E. Shaver

ELMOR E. SHAVER, 92, of LAKEWOOD, passed away, Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Ocean Medical Center. Born in Huntington, WV, to the late Asa Elmor and Bertha May Shaver, he had lived in Wayne for forty-two years and then in Sutter Creek, CA, before moving to Lakewood three years ago. A well known and respected marine electrical engineer, Mr. Shaver was self employed from his high school graduation until entering the United States Maritime Commission in 1940 as supervising inspector responsible for all repairs and maintenance of naval and Merchant Marine ships in ports across the East Coast. From 1948 until 1970, he was employed by the Isthmian Steamship Company, New York, as Superintendent of Electrical Engineering. In 1970 he became an owner and partner of Hose-McCann Corporation, Brooklyn, retiring in 1988. He was a graduate of the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken; Baltimore Polytechnic Institute; and McKinley-Roosevelt, Chicago. An avid sportsman, Mr. Shaver had played semi-pro baseball in the late 1930's and was a part-time scout for the Oakland Athletics. He was a "jack of all trades" who could fix and build anything. He was a former member of the Little Falls United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Gelston Shaver; his brother, Clive Shaver; and by his son-in-law, Stephen Smith. Surviving are his son, David E. Shaver, Esq. and his wife Lori of Point Pleasant; his daughter, Dianna Gail Smith of Jacksonville, FL; and five grandchildren, Greg, Sandra, Grace, Lila, and Isabel. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until a 11:30 a.m. memorial service, Saturday at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road.
