Obituary of Hugh V. Hughes

HUGH V. HUGHES, 75, of POINT PLEASANT, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at home after a long illness. Born on November 24, 1933 in Jersey City, to the late Hugh and Sarah Jane Hughes, he has lived in Point Pleasant since 1941. He was a 1951 graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School and veteran of the US Coast Guard, being honorably discharged in 1956. Mr. Hughes joined the Point Pleasant Police Department in 1969 and in 1981 was promoted to Detective Sergeant. He retired, due to a heart attack, in 1984 and later returned to the department working as a computer operator until retiring in 1998. While a police officer, he was a member of the Point Pleasant Police Riot Squad and was the motorcycle officer. He will be remembered as the police officer who always chaperoned the Point Pleasant High School overnight band and class trips during the 1970's. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Point Pleasant; and was a past member of the P.B.A.; the V.F.W., and the L.O.O. Moose. A past-president of the Point Pleasant High School Sports Booster Association, he also had coached for the Point Pleasant Little League and the American Legion Baseball League. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Mary Ann Hanly Hughes; his loving children, daughter and son-in-law, Colleen Hughes Lee and Gerald Lee, daughter, Kim Hughes Boesch, and son and daughter-in-law, Mickey and Kellie Hughes; grandchildren, Alison Boesch May, Brian Lee, Thomas Boesch, Bridget Lee DeLuise, Taylor Hughes, and Ty Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Peyton Boesch, Mary Madison Boesch, Jackson May, and McKenna Lee. Friends may visit from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m., Friday, June 12, at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 9 a.m., Saturday, a Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Peter R.C. Church, Forman & Saint Louis Avenues, Point Pleasant Beach. Interment will be held privately.
