Obituary of Doris P. Cherry

Doris P. Cherry, 79, of Wall, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at her home. And although physically no longer with us, spiritually she has just "Gone Shopping." Born December 22, 1929 in Hartlepool, England, to the late Thomas H. and Doris Pegg (nee Holmes), she came to the US at the age of three. She was a long time Point Pleasant Beach resident and moved to Four Seasons at Wall in 1999. For many years, she was a Naples, FL, "Snowbird." Doris was a retired teacher and for thirty years taught at the G. Harold Antrim School, Point Pleasant Beach. She received her Bachelors degree from Kean College and earned her Masters at Seton Hall University. She also was a custom dress designer and owned her own line entitled, "Cherrywear." Doris' talent was certainly validated when Vogue magazine published her patterns. In 1980, she had the privilege of being elected to the Borough Council of Point Pleasant Beach. She celebrated summer by volunteering for the "Big Sea Day" Parade. Doris had been a member and past-president of the Point Pleasant Beach Republican Club; the Manasquan River Yacht Club; former Girl Scout leader; and the Saint Peter School P.T.A. She also was a member of the Buylows a woman's club of savvy investors at the Four Seasons. Favorite pastimes included playing Shanghai rummy, animals, croqueting, bocci, water aerobics, theatre, cruises, luncheons, and shopping. She was predeceased by her son, Thomas Cherry; two daughters, Mary Ann and Alyssa Cherry; and granddaughter, Arielle. Surviving to cherish her memory are her daughters, Vanessa Cherry Eytan of Toms River and Melissa Cherry of Naples, FL; her sister, Audrey Pegg of Bayville; and two granddaughters, Thea Eytan and Zahava Eytan, which complete her legacy. She also leaves her many friends, her former husband Thomas Cherry; former students, and colleagues. Friends may visit, and share their fondest memories of Doris, with the family from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., Thursday, July 23, at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 24 a graveside service will be held at the White Lawn Cemetery, Trenton and Borden Avenues, Point Pleasant. As an expression of sympathy, contributions made in her memory to either the Ladican Network, 1701 Kneeley Blvd., Wanamassa, NJ 07712 or the Jersey Shore Animal Center, 185 Brick Blvd., Brick, NJ 08723, are suggested.
