Obituary of Werner Gert Niers

Werner Gert Niers, 72, of Point Pleasant, passed away early Saturday, August 6, 2016. He was born in Dresden, Germany, and raised in what became West Germany, to the late Gerhard and Elfriede Niers. He moved to America in 1971 and lived in Point Pleasant for many years. A graduate of the University of Cologne, he received his Ph.D from Rutgers University in 1987. Prior to becoming a professor of humanities at Ocean County College, Dr. Niers was the editor of German-language newspapers in New York City. Surviving are his wife of nearly forty-five years, Thelma (Hurley) Niers; son, Geoffrey Niers, his wife Sherri, and granddaughters Katelyn and Ashlee of Brick; daughter, Leigh Ann Niers, Jeremy Wragge, and their daughter Charlotte of Brick. Dr. Niers is also survived by his brother, Peter, and wife, Lydia, of Germany, along with nephews Marvin and Michael. At 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11 a memorial service will be held at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Point Boro First Aid/EMS, 1200 Beaver Dam Rd., Point Pleasant, NJ 08742.
