Obituary of William H. Lewis

William "Bill" H. Lewis, 90, of Point Pleasant died Thursday, February 14th, 2013 with his family by his side. He was born August 22, 1922 in Point Pleasant, NJ to the late Charles and Violetta Lewis. He spent a majority of his childhood living in Jersey City while vacationing often to see his Aunt and Uncle in Point Pleasant. As an adult, coming back from war, he made the decision to make Point Pleasant his long-time home. As a young man, Bill earned a try-out for the New York Yankees and played catcher for their minor league team. He proudly served his country in World War II, serving as a Gunner's Mate and as an Armed Guard on the USS Lafayette in the U.S. Navy. Bill also served his community proud with the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, where he retired as Captain. He was also a member of the Point Pleasant Fire Department where he served as Chief. He was a proud member of VFW Post 4715 where he served as Commander for four terms. He was Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade for the past three years. He is predeceased by his first wife Edna (Voight) Lewis and Emma (Woodman) Lewis and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Wolleon) Lewis. Surviving are Son: William Lewis, Jr. of Brick, NJ, Son and Daughter-in-law: Robert and Linda Lewis of Temecula, CA and Daughter: Stacey Lewis of Point Pleasant, NJ. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte and husband Donald Lamont of Florida. His eight grandchildren include: Christopher Lewis, Matthew Lewis, William "Cody" Lewis, Samantha Slavico, Ryan Slavico, Kariann Underhill and Jonathan Parham. Great grandchildren include: Olivia, Brandon, Braeden, Donovan, Paisley, Khloe, Aidan and Kaleb. His step-family includes: Roger Woodman and wife Jean, Sue Cole and husband John, Jean Brendel, Edward Woodman and step-grandchildren: Jessica Arnot and husband Tom, Brian Cole and wife Allison, Steven Brendel, Sara Brendel, Shelby Brendel. Also, his two faithful companions: Shamus and Midnight. He was loved by many and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 19 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, where at 7:30 p.m. remembrances will be shared.
