Obituary of John J. Nestor, Jr.

John J. Nestor, Jr., 95, of Brick, passed away on June 20, 2014. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Newark on December 6, 1918 to John and Josephine Nestor. He was raised in Newark and North Arlington. He graduated from Queen of Peace High School in 1937. He went on to Seton Hall College and graduated in 1941. After college, John proudly served in the United States Army for four years during World War II. On November 28, 1946, John married the love of his life, Mary Mercedes Wiggins. Together they raised nine children in Wayne, NJ. After a successful career in construction supply sales, John retired to the Jersey Shore in 1981. He enjoyed 33 years of retirement at the shore, living first in Pt Pleasant and then Brick. John spent his retirement years doing many of his favorite things, including cooking, gardening and fishing. He especially loved to spend time at the Fisherman's Co-op Dock and the Point Pleasant Inlet, swapping fish stories with the many friends that he made there. John was very proud of his fishing prowess and his Irish heritage, but he was most proud of his family. John was predeceased by his parents, his sister Eileen, and his brother Bill. He was also predeceased by his beloved sons Kevin (1972) and Bob (1975). John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Wiggins Nestor, as well as seven children and their spouses, Jack and his partner Ron Villa of Seattle, WA; Mary-Jo Allen and her husband Skip of Belmar; Kathy Hanenberg and her husband Ted of Wayne; Mike of Denver, CO; Patty Matthews and her husband Don of Wayne; Jim of Brick; and Terry Cunningham and her husband Bill of Toms River. John is also survived by eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, his wonderful caregiver Janet and his faithful canine companion Cassie. A Mass of Remembrance will be held in John's honor at Sacred Heart Church, 751 Main Avenue (Route 35), Bay Head on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to Sacred Heart Church.
