Obituary of Joan Longstreet Herman

JOAN LONGSTREET HERMAN AGE 84 - POINT PLEASANT Joan Longstreet Herman passed away on July 29 after a brief illness. Born Joan Shaughnessy during the Great Depression, one of eleven children of James and Catherine Shaughnessy, she lived her entire life in Point Pleasant. Widowed at age 36, she bravely and alone raised her three grateful children. Joan was a lifelong communicant of Saint Peter's Church, and a former member of the PTA, Rosary Altar Society, Glorious Years, Senior Beehive, and Bereavement Group there. She also volunteered her time to Saint Peter's Religious Education program, Point Pleasant Hospital, and Claremont Center nursing home. She is survived by her devoted children James H. (Caroline) Longstreet of Elmhurst, Illinois; Teri (Robert) Longstreet Poff of Brick; and Paul (Mary) Longstreet of Point Pleasant; precious grandchildren Abigail (Austin) Kennedy, James B. (Brekke Bounds) Longstreet, Brendan Poff, and Megan, Molly Joan and John Longstreet; infant great-granddaughter Ada Joan Kennedy; faithful brothers and sister Paul, Francis and Michael Shaughnessy, and Alice Bembridge; many loving nieces and nephews; along with a raft of peerless, treasured hand-sewn quilts. She was preceded in death by cherished husbands LeRoy Longstreet and Edward Herman, and beloved brothers and sisters James, Mary, Catherine, Margaret, John, and Nancy. Joan will be fondly remembered by all who knew her as an unfailing instrument of God's peace. Her family thanks the staffs of Claremont Center and Holy Redeemer Hospice for the constant and tender care they provided. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 p.m. & 7 - 9 p.m., Friday, August 1, at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 10 a.m., Saturday, August 2, a Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Saint Peter's Church, 406 Forman Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach, followed by interment at Saint Catharine Cemetery, Sea Girt.
