Obituary of Leonard T. Safford

Leonard Thomas Safford, Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on February 28 with his beloved wife Mary by his side. Mr. Safford was born in Jersey City, NJ and lived most of his life in Bayonne before moving to Point Pleasant in 1985. He was a graduate of Bayonne Technical High School and served his country proudly in World War II as a staff sergeant in the Ninth Army Air Force. Mr. Safford was a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Ironworkers Local 45 for his entire career, retiring in 1985. He was a fifty year member of the Knights of Columbus and the F. A. Mackenzie American Legion Post 165 in Bayonne. Leonard was predeceased by his parents Catherine (Martin) and Leonard Safford, his brother Edward Murphy, and his sister Lillian Berry. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Mary (nee Maguire), his son and daughter-in-law Leonard T. Safford, III and Linda Safford, his daughters and sons-in law, Dr. Katherine and Joseph Ramus, and Mary and Christopher Curioli. Mr. Safford is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. & 7 - 9 p.m., Wednesday, Mar. 2, at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Martha, Point Pleasant, followed by interment at the Doyle Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
