Obituary of Shirley M. VanZandt

Shirley M. Van Zandt of Point Pleasant died on March 17, 2011. Mrs. Van Zandt was born in New York City to parents Elsa and Walter Krapf. Her parents and she moved to New Jersey when she was two years old. As a child, Mrs. Van Zandt and her parents traveled extensively throughout the United States. She attended schools in Newark and Glen Ridge, graduating from Barringer High School where she garnered honors including National Honor Society and The German Prize (language honor). She attended Bucknell University, Rutgers University and received her Master's degree from Kean College. She taught history to grades 7-9 in Middletown Township Schools for 32 years and served as a guidance counselor, which she loved. Following retirement, she volunteered at the Point Pleasant Hospital Gift Shop for several years. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Louis S. Van Zandt in 1991. She has one daughter, Deborah S. Rockafellow. An avid doll collector, Shirley was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and was active until recent years with local social groups including Golden Circle and Glorious Years. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Mar. 20 at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 11:30 a.m., Monday, a service will be held at the funeral home followed by entombment at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
