Obituary of Thomas G. Fitzgerald

Thomas G. Fitzgerald, of Point Pleasant Beach, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2011 at his home. Thomas was born in Plainfield and raised in Rahway. During World War II he served in the US Navy as a radio operator aboard the USS Cincinnati. He and his family summered in Point Pleasant Beach and moved there full time over thirty years ago. He retired after thirty-two years of employment by the Rahway Police Department as a Captain. Tom was very proud of the fact he never was late or missed an assigned duty day during his entire career. He was a life member of the Rahway Elks, the Rahway Retired Police Officers Association, the Union County Police and Firemen's Retirement Association, The American Legion, and the Point Pleasant Beach Republican Club. For over nine years, he served on the Point Pleasant Beach Board of Adjustment, was a former delegate for the Rahway P.B.A., Local No. 31, and also served as president, secretary, and trustee for the Rahway P.B.A. He was very active in American Legion Baseball and in later years could be seen in the dug outs of Point Pleasant Beach Little League. Tom was a communicant of Saint Peter R.C. Church, Point Pleasant Beach. Tom viewed the Annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade for thirty-two consecutive years, the last as a special guest with a reserved seat on the steps of Saint Patrick's Cathedral. He was predeceased by his dear wife, of fifty-eight years, Ellen; his brothers, William & Edward; and his sister, Catherine Clausen. Surviving are two sisters, Marion Wenner of FL and Margaret Cole of VA; his son, Thomas and his wife Sharon of Point Pleasant Beach; his grandsons and their families, Ryan & Rebecca of Florida, Timothy & Jennifer of Tinton Falls, and Kevin & Nancy of VA. He was known as Pop-Pop to four great grandchildren, Logan, Emery, Kathryn, and Parker. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Doris & Kay Fitzgerald. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 p.m. & 7 - 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road. At 9 a.m., Thursday, July 28, Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Peter R.C. Church, Point Pleasant Beach, followed by interment at Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
