Bernice Palisi

Obituary of Bernice Palisi

Bernice Bobal Palisi passed away September 15, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born in Perth Amboy, NJ in 1928, and graduated from Perth Amboy High School and Newark State Teachers College (Kean University). While teaching elementary grades at Madison School in Rahway, she met and married her handsome co-worker Marino Palisi. In 1962, Bernice and Marino moved to Point Pleasant Beach where dad was the elementary principal and they lovingly raised their four children by the beach. Bernice taught first and second grades at Lanes Mill School in Brick for twenty-five years, retiring in 1992. In recent years, she lived at Brandywine At The Gables in Brick. No one loved life more than Bernice. She made friends wherever she went and was cheerful no matter the circumstance. She even considered recurring medical treatments to be social occasions, a chance to enjoy the company of staff and patients. People who knew her never forgot Bernice, and she loved to run into former students who as adults remembered her and could share stories of their own children. Bernice was a teacher who inspired learning through kindness, fun and play. She always found unusual arts and crafts projects for the students that made them want to come to school, and they excelled as a result. Shopping was one of her favorite activities, something she approached with the energy of a racehorse at the starting gate. Her main passion, though, was her family and friends. They were her life. She was pre-deceased by her husband Marino and sister-in-law Agnes Bobal and is survived by her children and their spouses: Marianne Kavanagh (Matthew), Sarah Chapin (Judson), Michael Palisi (Andrea) and Thomas Palisi (Susan). Her grandchildren were the lights of her life: Adam, Jordan and Taylor Palisi, Bill, Dan and Ashley Kavanagh, Alexa and Thomas Palisi, and Meredith Chapin Hamner (Chip), as well as great-grandchildren Chance and Wes. She is also survived by her brother Albert Bobal, brother- in law Anthony Palisi (Dyane) , many nieces and nephews, cherished friends and their children-all of whom she felt to be family. Visitation will take place, Sunday, September 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Pable Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 406 Forman Ave., Point Pleasant Beach, Monday, September 19 at 9:45 a.m. with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Marino and Bernice Palisi Scholarship Fund, c/o Point Pleasant Beach Education Foundation, 299 Cooks Lane, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers who showed her so much kindness and gave us more time, especially the community of Brandywine at the Gables.
