Jan was in the eighth grade when I was a senior in Our Lady of the Valley High School.
After my four years in the service, we met as freshmen at Newark State College. We shared classes and worked on the college's newpaper together. After I obtained a teaching position at Brick, I told her that there were some openings at the new Intermediate School. We both opened the school in 1961 and taught together on a three person team. Later we worked in a larger six teacher team and during that time we both were also active BTEA members.
When I became Subject Supervisor, I had the privilege to observe Jan in the classroom. She was tough, hard, and demaned a great deal from her students. She had her own style as a professional, and her students loved her apporach by acheiving the goals placed before them. They always did well.
When my son Jim began his teaching career at Vets Middle, she was there to guide, direct, and assist. The Handschuch family will miss but not forget this extraordinary educator.

My deepest sympathy to the Picarell family on the loss of Ms. Picarell. She was my one of my middle school teachers in the Lake Riviera Middle School back in the day!!! I am now 57 years old. She was one of the best teachers that I had. She not only was a fabulous educator but a fabulous individual. She got me through a very difficult time in my young adolescent middle school years. I will always remember her for our study of the book Moby Dick. I learned so much from her as my teacher. She had a wonderful way to make you LOVE whatever it was she was teaching you. She was not only your teacher but she took each individual's strengths and weaknesses and built on them.
Rest in peace Ms. Picarell!!! Fondly, Paula

My sincere condolences to Jan's entire family. I taught with Jan at BTIS for only 2 years. During that time she was a great teacher, friend, team member, and wonderful representative for all the teachers in Brick Twp. May she rest in peace.

Jan was a remarkable woman. Feisty, passionate, dedicated and committed to the work she embraced as an educator and as an Elk. She always had kind things to say about my Scouts and after Elk functions that included dancing, loved to tease me about my lack of dancing skill. She will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to all of you and my prayers that the memories of the life she shared with you will bring you solace in the days to come.

Our friend Jan, for the last eight years you have been a part of our family, helping my children with scholarships, jobs, and just your heartfelt advice. We are so thankful to have had you with us, joining us for holidays and just casual visits. We will miss you so much. You were a ball of fire, with a heart of gold. We love you Jannie. God bless you. Rest in Peace. Rich, Jackie, Matt, Meredith, Alex and Donovan XO
